Godavari River History

The Godavari is a river in south-central India. It starts in the western state of Maharashtra and flows through the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal. It forms one of the largest river basins in India. With a length of 1465 km, it is the second longest river in India, after the Ganges. It originates near Trimbak in Nashik District of Maharashtra state. It flows east across the Deccan Plateau into the Bay of Bengal near Yanam and Antarvedi in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.[4] The Godavari is a major waterway in central India, originating in the Western Ghats Trimbakeshwar, in the Nashik Subdivision or District Of Maharashtra and flowing eastward across the Deccan Plateau through the state of Maharashtra. It is known as the Southern Ganges (dakshin ganga) because it originates from the river Ganga (underground water) near Trimbak in Nashik. It enters Telangana at Basar in Adilabad district. While passing through Telangana it touches Dharmapuri a small village where pilgrims visit ancient Hindu temples and bathe in the river. It crosses the Deccan Plateau and then turns southeast, entering the West Godavari district and East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, until it splits into two watercourses that empty into the Bay of Bengal. Basara, on the banks of Godavari in Adilabad District, is known for its temple to the Goddess Saraswati and is the second temple for the Goddess in India.
Rajahmundry, is the second largest city (after Nashik) on the banks of Godavari. At Rajahmundry, the river Godavari at its widest at approximately 5 km from Rajahmundry to the other bank at Kovvur.

The Sri Ram Sagar Project which was constructed on this river (1964–69) serves the irrigation needs of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Warangal districts.

Godavari pushkaram is a festival of River Godavari which occurs once in 12 years.The pushkaram festival last held in the year 2003.
The next festival,Godavari  Pushkaram is in 2015.
During Godavari pushkaram pilgrims from all over the country will have a holy dip with  the  belief that they would be relieved from all sins,
and perform rituals to departed souls.It is believed that during pushkaram all deities and rishies take holy dip,
a holy dip in Godavari which will enhance one's spritual,mental and physical abilities.
Pushkaram is a festival of rivers pertains to 12 important rivers in India  which occurs once in 12 years for each river.
The river for each year festival is  based on the presence of Jupiter on which Zodiac sign by that time.
The pushkaram lasts  for a period as long as the Jupiter remains in that particular Zodiac sign
